There are many educational institutions in Rajasthan. In which state-run Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer universities; Kota Open University; Pilani includes Birla Institute of Technology and Science. There are many government hospitals and dispensaries here. There are many Ayurvedic, Unani (Medicine based on herbs) and Homeopathy institutes here. The state government spends heavily on education, maternity and child welfare, rural and urban water supply and welfare works of the backward.
Public Education Department was established in the year 1844.
Medical College was established by Sawai Ram Singh in Jaipur in 1846-47 for higher education.
Lord Mayo established Mayo College in Ajmer in 1875 for English education.
On 12 August 1943, Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur opened MGD Girls School for girls.
SMS Medical College was established on 13th March 1946 at the time of Lord Wabel.
In 1947, Rajputana (Rajasthan University) University was established in Jaipur.
In 1951, literacy in the state was 8.50%, in which male literacy was 13.88% and female literacy was 2.66%.
After integration, keeping in mind the objective of all-round development of the state, the Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education was established in Bikaner in 1950 for the smooth operation of teachers.
After the implementation of Panchayat Raj system in the state since 1959, the responsibility of managing primary schools in rural areas was handed over to the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samitis under the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.
In the year 1997, separate Directorate of Elementary Education and Directorate of Secondary Education was established in Bikaner by bifurcating the Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education.
Directorate of Elementary Education is functioning from 1st January 1998
The entire elementary education has been handed over to the Panchayati Raj Institutions with effect from 2nd October 2010.
Sanskrit Directorate was established in 1958 to promote Sanskrit language in the state.
From May 1957, the Board of Technical Education was established in Jodhpur.
According to the 2011 census, the literacy rate of Rajasthan is 66.1 percent, which has increased by 5.7% since 2001.
The state has recorded a historic increase of 21.85% in the literacy rate in the decade from 1991 to 2001.
